STRASBOURG, France, May 26 (UPI) -- Francesca Schiavone of Italy scored a timely victory Saturday in the championship match at the Strasbourg International in France.

Schiavone topped Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-4 to win her first tournament of the year and gain some momentum heading into the French Open, which she won in 2010.

Schiavone hasn't gotten past the third round in a tournament this year since making the semifinals in Brisbane.

Schiavone won 73 percent of her first-serve points while Cornet was hampered by seven double faults.
