The three cities that remain will prepare a detailed description of their plans to host the Olympics and will be visited by the IOC's evaluation commission.

After a report is put together by the commission, an election to determine the host city will take place at a full meeting of the IOC in September 2013.

New York and Chicago made unsuccessful attempts to host the 2012 and 2016 Games, but no U.S. city submitted a bid for the 2020 Olympics. The 2012 Games will begin in just over two months in London and the 2016 Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro.

Tokyo hosted the 1964 Olympics and, along with Madrid, was a finalist for the 2016 Games. Istanbul has failed in four previous attempts to hold the Summer Olympics.
