Tomic, Ferrero win as Nice gets under way

NICE, France, May 22 (UPI) -- Bernard Tomic of Australia and Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero led a group of 12 winners Tuesday in the rain-delayed opening session of the Nice Open.

After rain washed out scheduled play Sunday and Monday, all 12 first-round matches were played Tuesday at the Nice Lawn Tennis Club.

Tomic, seeded fifth, handled Slovak Lukas Lacko 6-2, 6-3, while Ferrero gutted out a 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6) victory over sixth-seeded Dutchman Robin Haase.

Seventh-seeded Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan beat Colombian Alejandro Falla 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 6-1 and Steve Darcis of Belgium surprised eighth-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

Other Day 1 winners included Russian Nikolay Davydenko, American Brian Baker, Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin, Brazilian qualifier Thomaz Bellucci, Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin, Italian Filippo Volandri, Belgian Xavier Malisse and Bulgarian qualifier Grigor Dimitrov.
