MLB: Baltimore 2, Washington 1 (11 inn.)

WASHINGTON, May 18 (UPI) -- Nick Markakis hit a one-out homer in the 11th inning Friday that gave Baltimore a 2-1 victory over Washington.

Pedro Strop survived a frantic bottom of the 11th to preserve Baltimore's fourth win in a row.

Washington's Edwin Jackson and Baltimore's Jake Arrieta staged a tremendous pitchers' duel, but both had long since left the scene when Markakis delivered the winning run.

Jackson gave up a run on five hits with eight strikeouts over eight innings. Arrieta struck out nine and surrendered a run in seven frames.

The homer to right by Markakis came on a 2-2 pitch from Ryan Mattheus (2-1), who entered the game in the 11th as Washington's fourth pitcher.

Kevin Gregg (2-1) worked a perfect 10th for Baltimore to get the win, and Stroup picked up his third save while surviving the 11th.

Stroup hit Stephen Lombardozzi with a pitch to open the 11th, but Ian Desmond promptly grounded into a double play.

Roger Bernadina then reached on a third-strike wild pitch and moved to second on a single by Ryan Zimmerman. With the potential tying run on second and winning run on first, Stroup got Adam LaRoche to hit a ground ball back to the pitcher's mound for the final out.
