DALLAS, May 17 (UPI) -- Southern Methodist University fired Athletic Director Steve Orsini Thursday, a month after he had hired Hall of Fame basketball coach Larry Brown.

No specific reason was given by the school for the move.

Tim Leonard, SMU's associate director of athletics for external affairs, was named to replace Orsini on an interim basis.

"We thank Steve for his contributions to SMU athletics," said SMU President Gerald Turner. "After several discussions over the last few weeks, it became apparent to me that it was necessary to make this change."

Brown, 71, is the only coach to have won both an NBA championship and an NCAA title. He was hired to replace Matt Doherty in hopes he could lead the Mustangs to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1993.

SMU moves from Conference USA to the Big East Conference this summer.
