ATHENS, Greece, May 17 (UPI) -- The Olympic Torch was handed to Britain Thursday, in anticipation of the London Summer Olympics, in a ceremony in Athens, Greece.

The torch, symbolic of the Games, was presented to Princess Anne, president of the British Olympic Association, in Panatheneic Stadium, site of the 1896 Games that ushered in the modern Olympic movement. The British delegation included soccer star David Beckham, former runner Sir Sebastian Coe, London Mayor Boris Johnson and Sports Minister High Robertson, The Daily Telegraph reported.

"It was absolutely wonderful and went off like clockwork," said Johnson of the ceremony.

The arrival of the torch in Athens was the final leg of a relay run from Olympia, site of the ancient Games. It will be transported to Athens airport, and will be delivered to London Friday to begin a 70-day tour of Britain, the newspaper said.
