HELSINKI, Finland, May 11 (UPI) -- Justin Faul scored with 22 seconds left in overtime Friday, giving the United States a difficult 3-2 win over Kazakhstan at the World Hockey Championship.
Kazakhstan, which had given up 10 goals in its previous meeting with the Americans, got a goal from Talgat Zhailauov with 4:06 in regulation to forge a 2-2 tie.
Richard Bachman, backup goaltender for the Dallas Stars, stopped 17-of-19 shots to get the victory.
The United States remained in third place in Group H with two round-robin games remaining. The top four finishers in the eight-team group will advance to the quarterfinals.
Canada moved to the top of the group with a 5-3 victory over Finland, which dropped into second place. The Americans have a four-point lead over both Slovakia and Switzerland.
In the other group, Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Latvia hold down the top four places.
