CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 5 (UPI) -- Webb Simpson's late birdies Saturday enabled him to card a 3-under-par 69, good for a one-stroke lead after three rounds of the Wells Fargo Championship.

The late surge, in which Simpson birdied two of the final four holes, gave him a slim lead over a pair of competitors at 14-under 202 after 54 holes at Quail Hollow.

D.A. Points (69) and Ryan Moore (68), who co-led with Simpson after the first round, turned in steady and solid performances to knot for second place at minus-13.

Sharing fourth place one shot further back were world No. 2 Rory McIlroy, who overcame two bogeys to fire a 6-under 66, and second-round leader Nick Watney (72).
