GREENBURGH, N.Y., May 2 (UPI) -- New York Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire said Wednesday he didn't intentionally punch the glass case of a fire extinguisher in anger as reported.

Stoudemire said at the Knicks' practice facility media accounts he intentionally smashed his fist through glass in frustration following a loss in Monday's Game 2 of the Eastern Conference first-round series against the Heat were erroneous.

The incident at American Airlines Arena in Miami resulted in lacerations to Stoudemire's left hand, which will force him to miss Thursday's Game 3, in which New York will try to rally from an 0-2 series deficit.

"The fire extinguisher door was 85 percent metal and 2 percent glass, or whatever," he told The New York Times. "I swung my arm backward. It wasn't like I had a closed fist and punched the glass. I was frustrated that we were down 0-2 and I was trying to make some noise, not injure myself.

"When I saw that my hand was cut, I was like, What? I was very upset and upset with myself. But never in a million years did I think I would cut my hand."
