NEW YORK, May 2 (UPI) -- Jake Arrieta struck out nine over eight innings Wednesday and teamed with Jim Johnson in bringing Baltimore a 5-0 win over the New York Yankees.
New York has lost back-to-back games and suffered its third shutout of the season.
Arrieta (2-2) gave up five hits and did not walk a batter while throwing 111 pitches. Johnson closed out a perfect ninth with a strikeout in a non-save situation.
Matt Weiters opened the scoring with a solo homer in the fourth, his seventh of the season, and he also doubled home a run during Baltimore's three-run seventh. Nick Markakis hit a solo shot in the seventh.
Ivan Nova (3-1) took the loss, surrendering five runs on nine hits in 6 1/3.
New York third baseman Eric Chavez left the game in the fifth inning after hitting the ground hard diving for what turned out to be a double down the left field line off the bat of J.J. Hardy.
Chavez stayed in the game on defense, but was replaced in the midst of his at-bat during the bottom of the fifth.
