Farah posts upset win over Davydenko

MUNICH, Germany, May 1 (UPI) -- Qualifier Robert Farah eliminated seventh-seeded Nikolay Davydenko in Tuesday's first-round play at the BMW Open tennis tournament in Germany.

Farah, ranked 210th in the world, defeated Davydenko 6-3, 6-2 without dropping serve. He was able to finish off four break-point chances of his own and won one fewer (27-28) point when receiving serve than Davydenko managed to hold.

No. 6-seeded Mikhail Youzhny and eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis managed to advance to the second round. Youzhny topped Philipp Petzschner 7-5, 7-5 but needed three breaks in the first set and two in the second to do so. Baghdatis staggered in the second set but still had a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Tobias Kamke.

Two other qualifiers joined Farah in the second round as Dustin Brown swept by Daniel Brands 6-4, 6-3 in 62 minutes and Marinko Matosevic beat Mikhail Kukushkin 7-5, 6-1 behind five breaks.

Tommy Haas took out Michael Berrer 6-0, 6-2 in a battle of wild-card entrants. Hass earned a second-round shot at top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Also Tuesday, Matthias Bachinger defeated Alejandro Falla 7-6 (7-3), 6-2; Ernests Gulbis advanced over Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-2; Potito Starace got past David Goffin 6-3, 7-6 (7-3); and Sergiy Stakhovsky won a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 decision over Cedrik-Marcel Stebe.
