Angels release Bobby Abreu

CLEVELAND, April 28 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Angels announced Friday they had released veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu.

Abreu has played 17 major league seasons with Houston, Philadelphia, the New York Yankees and the Angeles. During his four seasons with the Angels he batted .267 with 103 doubles, 246 RBI and 75 stolen bases.

His career batting average is .293.

Abreu is one of only four players with at least 500 doubles, 250 home runs and 350 stolen bases. Barry Bonds, Rickey Henderson and Craig Biggio also reached those totals.

He is the only player in major league history to have 20 homers, 20 stolen bases and 40 doubles in a season five times.

The Angels are off to a sluggish start this season, compiling a 6-14 record. They lost their fifth straight Friday in a setback against Cleveland.
