One of Jay's singles in the third drove in two runs and he had an RBI base hit in the fifth. Schumaker tripled home two runs in the second and also had an RBI single in the third.

The first seven St. Louis batters reached base in the third, with Matt Carpenter driving in two of the runs in that inning on a double. The outs were made on a sacrifice by pitcher Jake Westbrook and an inning-ending double play off a hard hit ball by Carlos Beltran to the second baseman.

Westbrook (3-1) collected the easy victory, giving up a run on seven hits over seven innings.

The first eight St. Louis runs were charged to Yovani Gallardo (1-2). He allowed 10 base runners while recording just six outs.
