DETROIT, April 24 (UPI) -- Michael Saunders drove in three runs and Alex Liddi homered Tuesday in the Seattle Mariners' 7-4 victory over Detroit.
Saunders delivered a two-run double in the third inning to put the Mariners ahead 4-0. Liddi's solo shot in the seventh gave Seattle a 6-4 cushion.
Ichiro Suzuki went 3-for-5 with two runs scored as Seattle took the opener of a three-game series at Comerica Park.
Jason Vargas (3-1) won for the third time in four starts to begin the season, surrendering four runs on six hits over six innings. The left-hander gave up one walk and fanned four.
Tigers starter Max Scherzer (1-2) was lit up for 10 hits over five frames, surrendering five runs.
Alex Avila clouted a two-run homer and Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-3 with a bases-empty shot for Detroit.
