Medina Garrigues wins opener in Morocco

FES, Morocco, April 23 (UPI) -- No. 1-seed Anabel Medina Garrigues raced through a straight-set win Monday in first-round play of the WTA stop in Fes, Morocco.

Medina Garrigues lost just only 13 points over nine service games in a 6-2, 6-4 win over Nina Bratchikova. She won 72 percent of the points on serve and half of those off Bratchikova's serve.

She advances to a second-round meeting with Mandy Minella, who got past Alexandra Panova 6-3, 7-6 (12-10). The straight-set match took more than 2 hours.

Patricia Mayr-Achleitner made quick work of fourth-seeded Yanina Wickmayer. Mayr-Achleitner cashed in 5-of-6 break-point chances in winning 6-4, 6-2.

No. 6-seeded Chanelle Scheepers edged past Anastasia Rodionova 6-4, 6-4 behind five service breaks.

Also Monday, Alexandra Cadantu topped defending champion Alberta Brianti 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 and Irina-Camelia Begu beat Timea Babos 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

A match between Arantxa Rus and Klara Zakopalova was suspended because of darkness with Rus, who won the first set, about to serve the 11th game of the third set. The match was even at 6-4, 5-7, 5-5.
