But Kuznetsova came back with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 decision over Ana Ivanovic to pull the hosts even after the first day of action.

Kuznetsova broke Ivanovic in the first game of the third set and went on to win eight of the final nine points on her own serve.

The best-of-five tie will be decided with Sunday's two reverse singles matches and a doubles rubber.
