Indians sign Damon to minor-league deal

CLEVELAND, April 17 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Indians announced Tuesday they have signed veteran outfielder Johnny Damon to a minor league contract.

The Tribe made the move after center fielder Grady Sizemore was placed on the 60-disabled list last month following back surgery.

Since his departure, Cleveland has been playing Shelley Duncan, Michael Brantley and Shin-Soo Choo in the outfield positions.

Damon, 38, played for Tampa Bay last season, hitting .261 with 16 home runs, 29 doubles, 73 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 150 games.

The 17-year veteran has racked up career totals of 231 homers and 1,120 RBI with a .286 average in stints with the Royals, Athletics, Red Sox, Yankees, Tigers and Rays.
