Rangers' Hagelin, Sens' Carkner suspended

NEW YORK, April 15 (UPI) -- New York Rangers forward Carl Hagelin was slapped with a three-game suspension and Ottawa's Matt Carkner was handed a one-game penalty by the NHL Sunday.

Both were cited for incidents in the Senators' 3-2 overtime victory over the Rangers in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series Saturday.

Carkner slammed New York forward Brian Boyle against the boards just 2:15 into game and pummeled his head repeatedly as he fell to the ice, not stopping until officials intervened.

He was given minor and major penalties as well as a game misconduct in the incident.

Hagelin later delivered an elbow to the head of Ottawa's Daniel Alfresson, who was injured on the play. Hagelin was called for a major penalty.

The Rangers said in a statement they accepted Hagelin's suspension but indicated they were "thoroughly perplexed" by the NHL's "inconsistency" in meting out discipline, presumably referring to Carkner's one-game penalty.

The series, which is knotted at one win apiece, resumes Monday in Ottawa.
