Austria dodges elimination in Davis Cup

CASTELLON, Spain, April 7 (UPI) -- Austria avoided elimination from the Davis Cup Saturday with a win over Spain in doubles competition.

Oliver Marach and Alexander Peya rallied to beat the favored Spanish team of Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (14-12) in a rain-delayed match that ran 3 hours, 39 minutes.

Spain started out quickly with a win in the first set but appeared to lose momentum after the brief rain delay and dropped the next two sets by identical 6-4 scores.

The final set went through the tiebreaker with neither side able to claim victory until Austria prevailed on the fifth match point.

Spain can still advance to the semifinals with a win in the fifth rubber Sunday between Nicolas Almagro and Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer.
