RALEIGH, N.C., April 5 (UPI) -- Eric Staal produced the only shootout goal in the third round Thursday, boosting the Carolina Hurricanes to a 2-1 win over Montreal.

The Hurricanes won in a shootout for the first time all season in a game between teams that will miss the playoffs.

Staal lifted the puck over the stick of goaltender Peter Budaj, giving Cam Ward his 30th win of the season. Ward stopped Lars Eller, David Desharnais and Erik Cole in the shootout.

Ward turned aside 30 shots and Carolina got its only regulation goal from Chad LaRose in the second period to tie it.

Blake Geoffrion scored for Montreal, which has lost five out of six. Budaj stopped 28-of-29 shots.
