Report: Sandusky termed pedophile in '98

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., March 24 (UPI) -- A psychologist labeled ex-Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky a "likely pedophile" in 1998, documents obtained by NBC News indicated Saturday.

The broadcaster said it obtained the complete file of an early investigation of Sandusky carried out by Penn State University police 12 years before he was charged with more than 50 counts of child sex abuse.

Among the revelations in the file was a report from State College, Pa., psychologist Alycia Chambers -- the therapist for one of Sandusky's alleged victims -- who warned then the coach displayed a "likely pedophile's pattern" in his conduct with the boy.

The file indicates the probe was launched after the alleged victim's mother claimed the boy told her Sandusky "bear hugged" and kissed him while they were naked together in a shower.

But the investigation was wrapped up after "it could not be determined that a sexual assault occurred."

"There was very little doubt in my mind [Sandusky] … was a male predator, someone that was in the process of grooming a young man for abuse," Chambers told NBC News. "I thought … my report was strong enough to suggest that this was somebody who should be watched."

Reds closer Madson to miss 2012 season

GOODYEAR, Ariz., March 24 (UPI) -- Newly acquired Cincinnati Reds closer Ryan Madson needs elbow surgery and will miss the entire 2012 season, the team announced Saturday.

The Reds signed the 31-year-old reliever to a one-year contract in January after he had spent his entire nine-year career with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Cincinnati had tapped Madson to be its closer, but the team revealed in a Twitter post a Friday examination turned up a torn ligament in his pitching elbow that will require reconstructive "Tommy John" surgery.

He had yet to appear in a spring training game due to what had been called minor elbow irritation.

Madson racked up 32 saves in 34 opportunities last season for Philadelphia, posting a 4-2 record with a 2.37 earned run average in 62 games.

Over his 491-game career, he has amassed a 47-30 record with a 3.59 ERA and 52 saves.

Former LA Coliseum execs indicted

LOS ANGELES, March 24 (UPI) -- The former general manager of the Los Angeles Coliseum was still in jail Saturday pending a court appearance on embezzlement and bribery charges.

Patrick Lynch was among six defendants indicted on charges they skimmed millions of dollars from the landmark stadium, which is run jointly by the state of California and city and county of Los Angeles.

The indictment unsealed Friday contained 29 counts and revolved around alleged payoffs made to stadium officials by two promoters of raves in return for low-cost access to the Coliseum and neighboring Sports Arena for their events.

The Los Angeles Times said arrest warrants were issued for a janitorial contractor and former Coliseum technical manager Leopold Caudillo, who were out of the country Friday.

Former horse exec Marje Everett dead at 90

LOS ANGELES, March 24 (UPI) -- Longtime thoroughbred racetrack executive Marje Everett died at her home in Los Angeles this week at the age of 90, a family friend said.

Everett was the owner and operator of tracks in Chicago during the 1960s and spent six years as chief executive officer of Hollywood Park in Southern California.

Everett's associate, Dorothy Carter, told the Los Angeles Times she had been in declining health in recent years and died Friday.

Everett broke into racing as a kid when her adoptive father, Ben Lindheimer, owned the Arlington race track in Chicago. She eventually took over the venture when her dad died in the 1940s.

She moved west in 1958 when she married Webb Everett, the manager of Golden Gate Fields in the Bay Area. After he died in 1977, she moved south to run Hollywood Park. She lost control of the landmark in 1991.

The Times said her stint at Hollywood Park came at an important time as the Breeders Cup got off the ground and off-track betting began to evolve, which ran counter to her idea of racetracks as a destination for fans with the parimutuel handle taking care of itself.
