CARSON, Calif., March 18 (UPI) -- Jay DeMerit scored the game's only goal in the 68th minute Saturday, handing Vancouver a rainy 1-0 road victory over Chivas USA.

DeMerit was wide open when Davide Chiumiento launched a corner kick in his direction. The defenseman, left alone after marker Oswaldo Minda fell on the wet field, headed it past Chivas goalie Dan Kennedy.

It was the first MLS career goal for DeMerit and was all the Whitecaps (2-0-0) needed for their second victory to open the season.

Chivas fell to 0-2 with a second straight home loss.
