NHL: Winnipeg 3, Washington 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, March 16 (UPI) -- Dustin Byfuglien scored the tiebreaking goal with 10:39 to play in the third period Friday, bringing the Winnipeg Jets a 3-2 victory over Washington.

The game was played in a playoff-type atmosphere since post-season berths are on the line late in the campaign. Winnipeg jumped over Buffalo into ninth place in the Eastern Conference and is two points behind the Capitals for the eighth and final post-season berth.

Washington never led, but twice overcame a one-goal deficit.

Andrew Ladd put the Jets in front midway through the opening period but Brooks Laich tied it 22 seconds later.

Nik Antropov again gave Winnipeg the lead with the only goal of the second period. Washington deadlocked it once more 27 seconds into the third on a power-play tally from Mathieu Perreault.

Byfuglien's goal came when he tipped in a shot by Evander Kane.

Ondrej Pavelec made 20 saves to get the win. Tomas Vokoun stopped 25-of-28 shots.
