SUNRISE, Fla., March 15 (UPI) -- Mikael Samuelsson's power-play goal with 2:03 to go in the opening period started an offensive surge Thursday that brought Florida a 6-2 win over Boston.
The Panthers scored three times in the second period to break open the game and went on to extend their lead over Washington in the Southeast Division to three points. It was Florida's third straight win.
Boston has lost four in a row. Its advantage over Ottawa at the top of the Northeast Division has been reduced to a single point.
Marcel Goc, Stephen Weiss and John Madden produced the second-period goals for Florida. Madden, who has been out two weeks with a lower body injury, scored his first goal of the season.
Jose Theodore won his third straight game by making 24 saves. Tim Thomas surrendered all six goals on 29 shots.
