Reports: 49ers sign Moss to 1-year deal

SAN FRANCISCO, March 12 (UPI) -- The San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement on a one-year deal with wide receiver Randy Moss, multiple reports indicated Monday.

ESPN, citing a source it did not name, first reported Moss had signed the deal with San Francisco. The Washington Post and the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury-News have also reported the development.

The 35-year-old Moss retired in August after 13 NFL seasons but indicated last month he was seeking a comeback.

He worked out with the 49ers Monday in a session during which head Coach Jim Harbaugh threw passes to him.

Moss made 28 catches for 393 yards with five touchdowns in 16 combined games with New England, Minnesota and Tennessee in 2010. In his career, he has hauled down 954 passes for 14,858 yards with 153 touchdowns -- second-most in NFL history behind Jerry Rice's 197.

The 49ers are looking for receiving help after going 13-3 in the 2011 regular season but losing in the NFC Championship Game to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

Woods: Achilles injury 'mild strain'

JUPITER, Fla., March 12 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods said Monday he has been diagnosed with a mild strain of his left Achilles tendon and will be back in action soon.

The former world No. 1 indicated on his Twitter account he will be hitting balls this week. He withdrew from the WGC-Cadillac Championship Sunday after 11 holes.

"Got good news from doc tonight," Woods wrote. "Only mild strain of left Achilles. Can resume hitting balls late in week and hopeful for next week."

Woods said Sunday his Achilles began bothering him, forcing him to withdraw from an event for the first time since last year's Players Championship.

Woods is set to participate in the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which begins March 22.

Redskins, Cowboys docked cap space

NEW YORK, March 12 (UPI) -- Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys will be docked millions of dollars in salary cap space for front-loading contracts, multiple reports said Monday.

The NFL released a statement saying "a small number of clubs" had been penalized by having space under their salary caps taken away due to contracts they signed in 2010 that pushed spending into an uncapped year.

The clubs included Washington, which will lose $36 million of salary cap space, and Dallas, which will lose $10 million, ESPN.com reported.

NFL.com said teams were warned not to push spending into the uncapped year as a way getting around future salary caps. But the NFL Network said the Cowboys and Redskins deny going against the policy.

"The Dallas Cowboys were in compliance with all league salary cap rules during the uncapped year," the Cowboys' said in a statement. "We look forward to the start of the free-agency period where our commitment to improving our team remains unchanged."

Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen said the club had received "no written documentation from the NFL concerning adjustments to the team salary cap in 2012 as reported in various media outlets."

"Every contract entered into by the club during the applicable periods complied with the 2010 and 2011 collective bargaining agreements and, in fact, were approved by the NFL commissioner's office," Allen said.

The penalties came as the NFL prepared to open its free-agency season Tuesday.

Baylor, Stanford, UConn, Irish top seeds

INDIANAPOLIS, March 12 (UPI) -- Baylor, Stanford, Connecticut and Notre Dame were awarded the top seeds Monday for the women's NCAA basketball tourney.

Player of the Year candidate Brittney Griner led Baylor to a 34-0 overall record, becoming the 12th team to enter the tournament undefeated. The Lady Bears faced little trouble while claiming the Big 12 Conference title.

They will top the Des Moines (Iowa) Region.

UConn (29-4) earned the top seed in the Kingston (R.I.) Region and will try for a fifth straight Final Four appearance after defeating Notre Dame in the Big East Tournament title game.

The Fresno (Calif.) Region's top seed is Stanford (31-1), which won the Pac-12 championship and comes into the tournament on a school-record 28-game winning streak.

The Fighting Irish (30-3) top the Raleigh (N.C.) Region, claiming their first No. 1 seed since 2001. That was also the year Notre Dame won its only national title.
