Police say Roethlisberger reneged on dog

FORT WORTH, Texas, March 7 (UPI) -- The police chief in Fort Worth, Texas, says Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger promised his department a K-9 dog from his foundation.

Jeffrey Halstead said that was the understanding a Fort Worth K-9 officer had after a conversation with Roethlisberger while the Steelers were in Texas for Super Bowl XLV, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. The team stayed in Fort Worth while playing the Green Bay Packers at Cowboys Stadium.

The officer said Roethlisberger told him the dog would be given the name "Zeus" after his own first dog, Halstead told the foundation in a letter.

"Unfortunately, all of the requests we receive simply cannot be met," the foundation said in a statement. "The Fort Worth Police Department submitted a grant application this year and was not selected. They sent us a letter expressing their disappointment and intention to inform the media. We have since attempted to contact them numerous times to discuss the matter. They have not returned our calls."
