NEWARK, N.J., March 6 (UPI) -- David Clarkson put New Jersey in front and touched off a third-period outburst Tuesday that gave the Devils a 4-1 win over the New York Rangers.

New Jersey won for just the second time in seven games.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored just 49 seconds into the contest to put the Devils in front and Derek Stepan tied it for the Rangers in the second period.

Clarkson delivered his 26th of the season 2:27 into the third, after which Ryan Carter and Patrik Elias tallied for the Devils. The goal by Elias was scored into an empty net.

Martin Brodeur made 25 saves to earn the 648th win of his career.

Henrik Lundqvist stopped 25-of-28 shots for the Rangers, who had won four of their previous five.
