Bruins lose backup goalie for a month

BOSTON, March 5 (UPI) -- The Boston Bruins announced Monday backup goaltender Tuukka Rask would miss at least a month due to injury.

Boston signed veteran goaltender Marty Turco to a one-year contract, although Turco must clear waivers before he can join the Bruins.

General Manager Peter Chiarelli said Rask was suffering from a strain in his lower abdomen, an injury he suffered last Saturday in a loss to the New York Islanders.

Rask has an 11-8-3 record this season with three shutouts and a 2.05 goals-against average.

Turco has not played this season, having been released by the Chicago Blackhawks following the 2010-11 campaign. He went 11-11-3 with Chicago in his only season with the Blackhawks after having spent a decade with the Dallas Stars.

Tim Thomas, Boston's regular goaltender who led the Bruins to the Stanley Cup last year, has gone 27-15 this season. The Bruins lead the Northeast Division by three points over Ottawa.
