Ferrer starts on right foot in Mexico

ACAPULCO, Mexico, Feb. 29 (UPI) -- David Ferrer began his defense of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel championship Tuesday with a straight-set win in the first round over Mexico's Santiago Gonzalez.

The Spaniard saved five break points and broke Gonzalez four times while breezing to a 6-1, 6-2 win.

The second seed in the tournament, Nicolas Almagro, needed three sets to oust Pere Piba 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

Fourth seed Kei Nishikori advanced when Albert Montanes retired while trailing 6-2, 4-1. Third seed Gilles Simon fell to Carlos Berlocq 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
