Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

CALGARY, Alberta, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Ray Whitney scored in the first round of the shootout Thursday and the goal stood up to give the Phoenix Coyotes a 4-3 victory over Calgary.
Five of the eight games on the NHL schedule Thursday wound up in a shootout.
Calgary earned a point thanks to a goal by Olli Jokinen on the power play that tied it with 1:46 to go in regulation.
Mike Smith then stopped Jokinen, Alex Tanguay and Jarome Iginla in the shootout to earn the victory and lift Phoenix to its fourth straight win.
Calgary took a 2-0 lead after one period but the Coyotes got consecutive goals from Daymond Langkow, Shane Doan and Whitney to move in front.
Smith stopped 21 shots. Miikka Kiprusoff made 26 saves for the Flames.
