Drug charges against Tommy Morrison dropped

WICHITA, Kan., Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Drug charges were dropped against former heavyweight boxing champion Tommy Morrison the day he was to have a hearing in a Kansas court.

Morrison had been arrested March 4, 2010, outside a fitness club in North Market, Kan., and charged in April with possession of marijuana with a prior conviction and possession of drug paraphernalia, The Wichita Eagle reported.

The newspaper did not say why the charges were dropped Tuesday in Sedgwick County District Court.

Morrison told the Eagle the day after his arrest he would go to the club and sit in his car, reading the Bible and mediating, before going inside to lift weights.

The Oklahoma native said at the time he had moved to Wichita nine months earlier to get involved with the Tommy Morrison Children's Foundation, which he wanted to be a camp for terminally ill children.

Morrison beat George Foreman in 1993 to become heavyweight boxing champion. He had also starred opposite Sylvester Stallone in "Rocky V" in the 1990s.
