REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Tom Martinez, who had been New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's personal quarterback coach, died of a heart attack Tuesday, his wife, Olivia, said.
It was his 67th birthday.
Martinez's death occurred while he was receiving dialysis treatment in Redwood City, Calif., the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Martinez, a former coach at the College of San Mateo in California, had begun mentoring Brady at a football camp at the college when the quarterback was 13 and continued working with him into the 2011 preseason. Martinez also worked with other NFL quarterbacks.
Martinez, who lived in Menlo Park, Calif., was at CSM for 32 years and coached football, basketball and softball. His 1,400 career wins in football, basketball and softball set a record for most wins in California community college history, the San Mateo Daily Journal reported. His CSM teams won 32 championships.
Doctors told Martinez last spring he had months -- or less -- to live because of kidney and heart problems. When specialists discovered his pacemaker was endangering his life, it was turned off in June and he had been working to strengthen himself while awaiting a kidney transplant, the Journal said.
