Ferrero falls to Meyer in Brazil upset

SAO PAULO, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Argentine Leonardo Mayer scored an upset over former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero Wednesday, dispatching him in the first round of the Brazil Open.

Mayer bested the sixth-seeded Ferrero 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 on the clay courts at Sao Paulo, bouncing the 2003 French Open champion from the event.

Ferrero won the Brazil tournament in 2010 when it was held at Costa do Sauipe.

Also Wednesday, No. 8 seed Albert Ramos advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Colombia's Santiago Giraldo, while Potito Starace of Italy prevailed over Chilean Paul Capdeville 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.

France's Jeremy Chardy also moved on with 6-4, 6-4 win over Slovenian Blaz Kavcic.
