Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
BOGOTA, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Russia's Valeria Savinykh scored an upset over sixth-seeded Mathilde Johansson in Monday's opening-round play of the XX Copa BBVA Colsanitas.
Savinykh bested Johansson 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-5 on the red clay courts of the Centro de Alto Rendimiento.
Another favorite to fall Monday was eighth-seeded Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, who was upended by Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino of Spain 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3).
Also Monday, Bogota native Mariana Duque-Marino delighted the home crowd with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over American Tetiana Luzhanska, while Petra Rampre bested Columbia's Karen Castiblanco 6-3, 6-4.
