Peer takes 6-0, 6-0 win in Doha

DOHA, Qatar, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Shahar Peer didn't lose a game Monday in posting a first-round win at the Qatar Total Open tennis tournament.

Peer ran over wild-card entrant Nadia Lalami 6-0, 6-0 in 42 minutes. She won nearly three-quarters of the points in the match, losing just seven on serve and 11 when receiving.

Three seeded players advanced Monday but Ksenia Pervak ousted 10th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. Pervak had a pair of breaks in each of the second and third sets.

No. 12-seeded Peng Shuai was a 6-0, 7-5 winner over Fatma al-Nabhani, while 13th-seeded Ana Ivanovic was up 6-1, 4-1 when Carla Suarez Navarro retired and No. 14-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova topped Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 7-5, 6-3.

Mona Barthel edged past Caroline Garcia 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4) and will go against No. 1-seed Victoria Azarenka in the second round. Azarenka and the other top eight seeds -- all ranked in the Top 13 -- received first-round byes this week.

Qualifiers Anne Keothavong, Varvara Lepchenko and Kateryna Bondarenko all earned spots in the second round with wins Monday. Other players advancing are: Christina McHale, Monica Niculescu and Tsvetana Pironkova.
