PATTAYA CITY, Thailand, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- No. 4-seeded Maria Kirilenko defeated a local favorite Friday in gaining a semifinal berth at the PTT Pattaya Open tennis tournament in Thailand.
Kirilenko topped Tamarine Tanasugarn 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, winning nearly two-thirds of the points in the second set. Kirilenko came out ahead in the tiebreaker after both players had two breaks in the first set.
She lost only six points on serve in the second, however, while getting three breaks in four games when Tanasugarn, a native of Bangkok, served.
Kirilenko will take on seventh-seeded Sorana Cirstea in Saturday's semifinals. Cirstea advanced when top-seeded Vera Zvonareva retired with a left-hip injury. The match was tied at 2-2 in the third set when play was stopped.
In other quarterfinal matches, qualifier Hsieh Su-Wei topped Sania Mirza 7-5, 6-3 after piling up five breaks and No. 3-seeded Daniela Hantuchova got past eighth-seeded Vania King in a tight 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 contest.
Cirstea takes a 2-0 series advantage against Kirilenko into the semifinals and Hantuchova will be playing Hsieh for the first time.
