LAUSANNE, Switzerland, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Jan Ullrich, the 1997 winner of the Tour de France and a five-time runner-up in the race, has been suspended from competition because of a doping violation.

Ullrich, 38, retired in 2007 but the Court of Arbitration for Sport Thursday still handed down sanctions, including disqualification of results from May 1, 2005.

Ullrich was implicated in an investigation by Spanish authorities that concluded Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes ran a doping program.

The suspension period began Aug. 22 even though Ullrich is retired from competitive cycling.

Ullrich won the Tour de France in 1997 and finished second to Lance Armstrong in 2000, 2001 and 2003 among his five runner-up results in the tour.

The CAS Monday announced it was partially upholding an appeal regarding three-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador. That action stripped Contador of his 2010 tour title and suspended him for two years, a penalty that will end after this year's Tour de France.
