

PARIS, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Marion Bartoli piled up seven breaks in a straight-set win Thursday in second-round play of the GDF Suez Open tennis tournament in Paris.
Bartoli, as the No. 2 seed, had a first-round bye and didn't play her first singles match in the tournament until late Thursday. She came away with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Petra Martic but the match took 1 hour, 45 minutes.
Bartoli had 23 break chances in the match and put away six of them in 10 receiving games. She won 54 percent of the points when Martic served.
Seventh-seeded Roberta Vinci, whose match was as long as Bartoli's, got past Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. She had seven breaks also and won 53 percent of the points off Mattek-Sands' serve but only half when serving.
Other second-round matches Thursday saw Angelique Kerber defeat Monica Niculescu 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 while qualifier Mona Barthel advanced with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Pauline Parmentier. Klara Zakopalova beat Tsvetana Pironkova 6-0, 6-3 and Yanina Wickmayer took out Christina McHale 6-2, 7-5.
Top-seeded Maria Sharapova takes on Kerber in Friday's semifinals. Barthel, who is 13-2 on the year, faces Wickmayer and Julia Goerges goes against Zakopalova and Bartoli meets Vinci in the other quarterfinal.
