No injuries were reported in the melee Sunday, police said.
Trouble was anticipated by authorities, the MassLive.com news Web site reported, with riot squads from the University of Massachusetts police, Amherst Police and State Police deployed before the Patriots' game against the New York Giants was over.
As revelers chanted "U.S.A" and "[expletive] the Giants," some set off firecrackers and other fireworks, smashed bottles and started fighting. Police ordered the crowd to disperse shortly after 10 p.m. Officers then used flashbang and smoke grenades to disrupt the throng. Riot squads and police on horseback then waded in, MassLive.com said.
The crowd was estimated from 1,500 to 3,000 people. Fourteen of them were arrested, including 13 university students.
"It was a large crowd and there was a need to issue a dispersal order to move them along," university spokesman Edward Blaguszewski said. "Police are saying there are no injuries and no damage. Certainly some fights broke out and there was rowdiness."
