MONTPELLIER, France, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Philipp Kohlschreiber recorded an upset Friday at the Sud de France Open and will join the top three seeds in the semifinals of the tennis tournament.
Kohlschreiber, the No. 7 seed, defeated fourth-seeded Richard Gasquet 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in earning the fourth spot in Saturday's semifinals. He had 18 aces, matching the number of points he lost in his 13 games serving.
Top-seeded Tomas Berdych dispatched Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 6-4. He lost his serve once but dropped just three points on serve in the first set and six in the second.
An all-French semifinal was the result of wins by second-seeded Gilles Simon and No. 3 Gael Monfils.
Simon got past wild-card entrant and No. 209-ranked Guillaume Rufin 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (2-7), 6-2. The match took nearly 3 hours. Simon had just one break through the first two sets but got two in the third to advance.
Monfils was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Jarkko Nieminen in 54 minutes. He lost six points in nine games serving.
Simon has won both times he's faced Monfils but both matches went three sets. Berdych is 6-1 in his career versus Kohlschreiber.
