MIAMI, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- The Miami Marlins said the first few pieces of sod were laid in preparation for 110,000 square feet of Bermuda sod to be spread around Marlins Park.
Team officials said local politicians were on hand Thursday to witness the first stages of sod laying, which they said will take about three days to complete, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Friday.
The team said they are planning to grow the grass to about 3/4 inch to create a slower field and take advantage of the team's speed.
"When you've got Gold Glove pitching and speed at the top of your lineup like (Jose) Reyes and (Emilio) Bonifacio, you want to give them the opportunity to get on base as much as possible," Marlins President David Samson said. "If we don't lead the league in infield hits, it means we're not having a good year."
