BOSTON, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Cam Ward made a stunning 47 saves Thursday in bringing the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-0 victory over Boston and their first season-series sweep of the Bruins.

The Hurricanes entered the NHL 40 years ago as the New England Whalers and had lost to the Bruins at least once every season until now.

Carolina went 4-0 against Boston this season, outscoring the Bruins 14-5 along the way. Ward has three shutouts for the season and 19 in his seven-year career.

The Hurricanes scored in each period, getting a first-period goal from Eric Staal and scores by Tuomo Ruutu in the second and Brandon Sutter in the third.

The unexpected sweep of the defending Stanley Cup champions came from the team that went into Thursday's action with the worst record in the Eastern Conference.

Tuukka Rask took the loss, stopping 28 shots.
