PITTSBURGH, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Evgeni Malkin forced extra time with a late goal and then got the decisive tally in a shootout Tuesday, handing the Pittsburgh Penguins a 5-4 win over Toronto.

Malkin scored with 6.6 seconds left in regulation, capping a furious rally that saw the Pens erase a three-goal in deficit in the third period.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 35-of-39 shots while Joe Vitale, Matt Cooke and Steve Sullivan also lit the lamp for Pittsburgh in the first contest of a home-and-home series with the Maple Leafs.

Toronto lost for the fifth time in its last eight games despite two goals and an assist from Mikhail Grabovski.

Clarke MacArthur and Tyler Bozak also scored for Toronto.

Jonas Gustavsson turned aside 31 shots for the Maple Leafs.
