NHL: New Jersey 4, New York Rangers 3 (SO)

NEWARK, N.J., Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored the only goal of a shootout and Martin Brodeur made 23 saves Tuesday in the New Jersey Devils' 4-3 win over the New York Rangers.

Kovalchuk, the first shooter in the tiebreaker, scored high to the glove side of Rangers netminder Martin Biron, and Brodeur made stops on Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik to preserve the victory.

The Devils' David Clarkson forced the extra time with a goal following a strange bounce off the endboards with 48 seconds left in regulation.

Kovalchuk also scored in regulation, as did Zach Parise, helping New Jersey snap a three-game skid.

Anton Stralman, Brian Boyle and Michael Del Zotto scored and Biron finished with 26 saves for the Rangers.
