Rangers ink Washington to 2-year extension

ARLINGTON, Texas, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Texas Rangers Manager Ron Washington has been signed to a two-year contract extension, the team said Monday.

Washington, 59, has led the Rangers to two straight World Series appearances and is the only manager in franchise history to guide the team to a post-season series victory.

The new deal runs through the 2014 season.

The Rangers' skipper, who owns a 427-383 (.527) career record, has increased the team's wins total in each of his five seasons at the helm, including a 96-66 mark last year.

He said it was a nice accomplishment, but not the most important thing.

"I don't think you go into it trying to improve on a [number] of wins because a lot of things go into that," Washington said. "What we have to improve on is the fundamentals of the game, the attitude, commitment and effort you bring every day."
