Team Chara wins NHL All-Star Game

OTTAWA, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Marian Gaborik registered a four-point day with three goals and an assist Sunday, boosting Team Chara past Team Alfredsson 12-9 in the NHL All-Star Game.

Phil Kessel, Jarome Iginla and Marian Hossa each produced a goal and two assists, while Joffrey Lupul found the net twice for Team Chara.

Team Chara won the contest in the final period when it scored six times. The squad was backstopped by Tim Thomas, Carey Price and Jimmy Howard, who combined to turn aside 41-of-50 shots.

Daniel Alfredsson collected two goals and added an assist for his own team. Henrik Sedin notched a goal and two assists for the losing side.

Henrik Lundqvist, Jonathan Quick and Brian Elliott teamed up to yield 12 goals on 44 shots for Team Alfredsson.


Abbott wins third figure skating title

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. figure skater Jeremy Abbott breezed to his third national title Sunday, dominating the field at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

After placing first in the short program Friday, Abbott again outpaced the competition Sunday, garnering 183.35 points during the free skate.

That easily topped Adam Rippon's free skate score of 157.93 and clinched the title for the 26-year-old with a total of 273.58 points.

Abbott also won national titles in 2009 and 2010.

Rippon finished second overall at 240.87, while Ross Miner used a strong performance in the free skate to finish third at 230.32.

Caydee Denney and John Coughlin took the pairs competition after winning Sunday's free skate, finishing with 189.70 points.

Last year's champion, Ryan Bradley, retired from competition last May.


Niners LB Aldon Smith arrested in Florida

MIAMI, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was free on bail Sunday after being picked up for driving under the influence in Miami Beach, police said.

Smith, 23, was freed on $1,000 bond Saturday following his arrest the night before.

Details of the arrest would not be released by police until Monday, WFOR-TV, Miami, said.

Smith led all NFL rookies in sacks this season with 14. He was drafted in the first round by the 49ers out of the University of Missouri.


Hoefl-Riesch wins tight super-combined

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany scored a narrow win over Lindsey Vonn in Sunday's World Cup super-combined at St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Hoefl-Riesch's combined time of 2 minutes, 8.41 seconds was a mere .03 seconds ahead of the American Vonn, who was seeking a sweep of the three World Cup events held at St. Moritz this weekend.

Vonn turned in a faster first super-g leg; however Hoefl-Riesch covered the slalom run in 48.28 to Vonn's 48.54.

"My skiing was good, my concentration was good, but a series of small mistakes cost me much time," Vonn said. "I caught my edges funny a couple of times."

Nicole Hosp and Elisabeth Goergl of Austria places third and fourth respectively followed by Tina Maze of Slovenia.

Maze trails Vonn by 387 points in the overall World Cup standings.
