ST. LOUIS, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- The St. Louis Cardinals were reportedly on the verge of signing free-agent pitcher Roy Oswalt Saturday, sources told ESPN.com.
A baseball source said the deal had yet to be finalized but was expected to be formally struck in the near future.
Oswalt, 34, is one of the few big-name free agents left on the market and has been pursued by Boston, Detroit and Texas.
The Cardinals have been downplaying their reported wooing of Oswalt; however, his addition to the team could bolster both the starting rotation and the bullpen, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said Saturday.
Oswalt, a right-hander, has been hampered by back trouble in the past two seasons but still notched 16 wins for Philadelphia last season. He boasts a career 153-93 record and 3.21 ERA.
