BEREA, Ohio, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Browns hired former Minnesota head Coach Brad Childress Friday as the team's offensive coordinator.

Cleveland Coach Pat Shurmer operated without an offensive coordinator during his first season with the Browns, during which they posted a 4-12 record that was second worst in the AFC.

Childress has coached at the collegiate and professional levels for 33 years and previously worked as an offensive coordinator at Philadelphia.

He was dismissed by Minnesota late in the 2010 season after spending five years with the franchise.
