RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Goalie Cam Ward survived a sustained Winnipeg assault in the third period Monday, backstopping the Carolina Hurricanes to a 2-1 decision over the Jets.

The Hurricanes went into the All-Star Game break with a victory thanks to Ward's late acrobatics. He made 14 of his 29 saves down the stretch, lifting Carolina to 18-24-9 at the season's half-way point.

Tim Brent and Jeff Skinner scored for the Hurricanes.

Winnipeg got its only goal from Kyle Wellwood and Chris Mason made 14 saves in the Jets' sixth loss in eight games.
