NEW YORK, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference has drawn a three-game suspension for delivering an illegal hit, the NHL announced Sunday.

Ference was sanctioned for a hit-from-behind on New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh during overtime of a 3-2 Rangers victory Saturday.

Ference was given a 5-minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct on the play, which resulted in a Marian Gaborik goal and a New York win.

The league said Ference will lose $36,486 in salary and won't be eligible to return until Feb. 2.
